Wrestling Terminology_______


Some helpful wrestling terms that Ric Flair says I shouldn't use... but I do!

Angle- A wrestling plotline or storyline which may involve only one match or may continue over several matches for some time; the reason behind a feud or a turn.

Babyface- The good guy or the fan favorite.

Blade- The practice of cutting oneself or being cut with a part of a razor blade. Also known as juicing.

Booker- The individual responsible for angles, finishes, hiring and firing in a promotion.

Bump- A fall or hit done as a spot (see spot) which takes the wrestler (or other participant, i.e. referee, manager) out of the ring or out of action.

Bury- To lower somebody by saying bad things about them.

Card- The matches on a show.

Cut a Promo- To do an interview or come out and start talking like McMahon does.

Draw- 1) To attract marks. n. the popularity of a wrestler, the ability to bring in mark. 2) A decision in a match in which no one wins or loses, a tie.

Face- Short word for babyface; Good guy or fan favorite.

Feud- A series of matches between two wrestlers or two tag teams, usually face vs. heel though face feuds and heel feuds are not unknown.

Finisher- The finishing move. i.e. F5, Angle Slam, Walls Of Jericho, Sweet Chin Music.

Foreign Object- An illegal object in the match like a chair or brass knuckles.

Gimmick- The personality of the wrestler. Val Venis' gimmick is a porno star.

Gold- Championship belt

Green- Not good due to inexperience.

Hard Way- Real blood produced by means other than blading.

Heat- 1) Fan reaction to faces and heels. The more cheers or boos a wrestler gets, the more heat he has. 2) When a wrestler is in trouble with officials backstage.

Heel- The bad guy.

House Show- A show that is not taped for TV.

Job- A planned loss.

Jobber- A wrestler who loses in order to make another wrestler look good. i.e. Barry Horowitz

Jabroni- Slang for the word jobber.

Kayfabe- When a wrestler acts in character. "Breaking Kayfabe" is when a wrestler acts out of character i.e If a heel is seen signing autographs and being nice to his fans.

Mark- A wrestling fan who believes everything in wrestling is real.

Mark out- To become very excited when something happens in wrestling.

Mid Carder- A wrestler that is not a main eventer, but not quite a jobber.

Over- To be popular with the audience.

Pop- When the fans cheer.

Push- When a wrestler wins a lot of matches to make him look good.

Run In- Interference by a non-participant in a match. save n. a run-in to protect a wrestler from being beat up after a match is over.

Screw Job- A match or ending which is not clean (definite) due to factors outside the rules of wrestling.

Shoot- Something in wrestling that is real, or not planned.

Stick- The Microphone

Strap- Championship belt.

Stretch- A form of shoot where one wrestler dominates rather than injures the other as a proof of personal superiority.

Submission Hold- A move that makes an opponent give up or tap out. i.e. Crippler Crossface, Ankle Lock

Turn- When a wrestler changes from a heel to a face, or from a face to a heel.

Work- Something in wrestling that is planned.
